Whipped Shea Butter- good stuff!

I am LOVING the whipped shea butter I made up today.  I had tried making up a very small amount earlier in the week and the kids' skin just soaked it in. It has moisturized their knees and elbows incredibly well.  So today I decided to make the big batch.  It turned out lovely.

Here are the ingredients (amounts listed below):
  • 16 oz. Unrefined Shea Butter. Purchased from www.sheabutterhut.com on a buy 2 16 oz. packages, get a 3rd free deal
  •  6.4 oz. Nutiva Organic Coconut oil (purchased from Amazon.com)- ours was melted due to the fact that it has a very low melting point, otherwise you'd need to melt it (76 degrees is the melting point).
  • 1 oz. Organic Vitamin E oil (purchased from www.organic-creations.com)
  • 1 oz. Organic Coconut fragrance oil (also from www.organic-creations.com)- of course you could use none or something else if you prefer.  The unrefined shea butter does have an earthy aroma though FYI.  I LOVE this scent and it is not too feminine for the boys in the family.  :)
Start by putting the shea butter in a bowl.  Melt it in the microwave for 30 seconds and then stir.  Repeat just until it liquifies.  Meanwhile mix the remaining ingredients together and set aside.  Once the shea butter liquifies, beat it on low with a mixer for about 30 seconds.  Refrigerate for about 10 minutes and then repeat.  Add the remaining ingredients and beat again.  Repeat the refrigerate and beating process until it forms a fluffy butter.  Spoon into containers and cover with lids.  Enjoy!  A little goes a very long way!
Here is the finished product:

Good job, Amy!! It looks great! I should make up some of this stuff, too...I have a feeling all of the swimming and playing this summer will cause some very dry, ashy skin around here. It sounds like you have a wonderful recipe. I might just "steal" it!

Thanks Chanda- and I really appreciated the tip to use coconut oil instead of olive. It really does absorb well. The pool, and it's ash producing results, is solely responsible for my desire to make this stuff up myself! the regular moisturizers haven't been cutting it again the chlorine!

If you decide to make it, let me know how you like it!

It looks downright yummy! The finished product reminds me of the meringue that my grandma topped her chocolate pies with!

Thank you! for listing the sites where you got the goods. Thats half of the battle. I'm going to give it a try since our over the counter moisturizer isn't working for Mary this summer. Although sometimes I'm not sure if she's chalky or just dirty!

Hey! That is awesome I'll have to make some!!! You can put this on the girls hair too! I don't know if you mentioned that in your post. But, I did see a video that it can be a natural relaxer. I don't know the mix but here is the video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PQD5vt5-3AI

Thanks ladies. Heather I am glad you appreciated hearing where I got the goodies to make it. It does help to have some leads rather than having to hunt everything down yourself. I figure since I already did that, the least I could do would be to let y'all know. I got the coconut oil after I ordered olive oil from the organic creations place after Chanda suggested it. It truly does absorb beautifully. :)

And Emily, I'll have to check out the video. You Tube can be so informational!

Have a good evening all!

I've never tried this - I usually stick to pure cocoa butter, which takes forever to sink in. The only stuff I can find that moisturizes as well but sinks in quickly is ridiculously pricey. How well does your recipe absorb?

Allison,

I am SO happy to report that this stuff soaks in very quickly. Chanda had suggested that I use coconut oil instead of olive for this reason and I am so glad I did because it really works well. A little goes a looooonng way too. If you give it a try, I'd love to know what you think. :)
